About:
The field hockey team has had a tradition of raising money for a needy
family on their cancer night game for many years. This year we had
two families. Shelby a first grader in town, and Lindsay a friend of
two girls on the team. The field hockey girls went to local
businesses and asked employers, for gift card donations. Those card
donations and other donations from the team families are put into
baskets, and displayed on cancer night to raise money. The field
hockey girls helped by setting up tables, tents, decorations, and the
snack shack on cancer night. All team players decorate luminary bags,
that are set up in the shape of the cancer ribbon around the field
flagpole. The girls also used cups to make the cancer ribbon in the
fence that the team uses for their tea light cancer ceremony. This
year, one of the field hockey players told her personal story about
the loss of her grandmother to cancer. The National Anthem was sung
beautifully by another teammate. All 38 players and both coaches play
in memory of someone they lost to cancer, or in honor of someone who
is fighting or has survived cancer. It is always a beautiful night
shared by the team, coaches, families, alumni, and the community.
