About:
Third grade students at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District have been learning how to demonstrate empathy for others and the importance of giving back to their community through a collaboration with Ronald McDonald House of Long Island in New Hyde Park.
Each third grade class was visited by Andy Kover, a volunteer at the house, where he spoke to students about how the house provides a “home away from home” for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost. Students also learned that the Ronald McDonald House was built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child.
Earlier this year students visited the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island and brought items from the house wishlist on the day of their field trip. Altogether, the third grade classes compiled approximately $500 worth of items for the house.
Furthering their outstanding commitment to community support, students collected approximately $1,700 from their annual Read-A-Thon to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
