About:
Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High School students, faculty and members of the NJROTC stood in unity on the front lawn of the school on Sept. 11, known as Patriot Day, to reflect on this fateful day in history. Together they honored those who are no longer with us as well as the survivors who still bear the scars, hurt and pain of having lost loved ones in the World Trade Center attack in 2001. The Mattituck and Cutchogue fire departments were also on-site with trucks and a large American flag on display.
“We will continue to pay tribute to the men and women who currently serve our community, the men and women who carry on the legacy of serving others over themselves,” Principal Patrick Burke said. “Today we renewed our commitment to the values that unite us: freedom, justice and the unwavering belief in the power of community. We have come together with a collective vision, wanting to ensure that our school community will never forget.”
Throughout the school day, students participated in lessons provided by the social studies department that focused on how communities move forward after tragic events and become stronger. Students also watched a 9/11 memorial video and participated in a Tunnels to Towers Foundation distance walk around the track. The culminating event for the day offered students daffodil bulbs to plant in front of the school in celebration of Patriot Day and to honor service men and women.
