About:
Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School coordinated numerous activities this April in honor of Autism Awareness Month, as part of the school’s emphasis on celebrating differences and promoting acceptance.
Students and staff members sported blue shirts on Monday, April 9, and viewed a video about autism awareness. Students received puzzle pieces, which they each signed to represent their support. Students in the BRAVE Club, under the guidance of co-advisors Amanda Milano and Brian Kelly, assembled the individual pieces to form a collage.
On Friday, April 13, members of the BRAVE Club distributed “Glow Blue for Autism” bracelets to each student as they entered the building. The week left a lasting impact, and Memorial’s main lobby still presents the reminder that “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.”
