About:
Community service is a core value of the LIU men’s hockey team, and the greater Long Island community is seeing that firsthand this holiday season.
For the fourth straight year, student-athletes and coaches of the LIU men’s hockey team took the ice with Ice Hockey in Harlem, a community-based non-profit, to work on hockey skills, team bonding, and interpersonal engagement.
“It means the world to us to give back to the community,” said Bronx native and team captain John Gormley. “I grew up not too far away from here, and it feels great to jump on the ice with these young kids who look up to us.”
LIU, which plays six games in December, has made it an annual tradition to contribute more to the community during the holiday season.
“Long Island University is a great school with a great athletics program,” said Ice Hockey in Harlem executive director Malik Garvin. “Head coach Brett Riley and the Sharks have been coming out here the past four years, and we could not be more grateful for their time and contributions.”
The LIU men’s hockey team is no stranger to community service. The Sharks have already contributed over 300 hours of service during the fall semester, giving back to those who support them.
“Ice Hockey in Harlem provides amazing opportunities for young kids to play the game we all love, and I am so glad LIU men’s hockey can partner with this great organization,” said head coach Brett Riley. “This is a wonderful holiday tradition for our program and truly an incredible experience for everyone involved.”
Ice Hockey in Harlem began in the winter of 1987 with the mission to improve the social and academic well-being of children from the Harlem community. Its educational programs enhance academic engagement, foster character development, and prepare participants for the future.
The Sharks return to the ice Friday at 7:30 p.m. for their second annual Teddy Bear Toss Game, against Stonehill.
