About:
Student leadership and community advocacy were on full display at Wellington C. Mepham High School as part of the school’s impactful Pirates for a Purpose Project. Senior student leaders Brayden Seligman and Jake Wilson took initiative to address a real community need by partnering with the Town of Hempstead to improve safety for students and residents.
Through their efforts, Stewart Avenue has now been officially designated as a school zone, complete with proper safety signage. This meaningful change will help increase driver awareness, improve pedestrian safety, and create a more secure environment for students traveling to and from school each day.
The project highlights the powerful role student voice and advocacy can play in shaping communities. By identifying a concern, collaborating with local officials, and seeing the initiative through to completion, Mepham’s student leaders demonstrated responsibility, perseverance, and civic engagement.
Programs like Pirates for a Purpose continue to empower students to make a difference beyond the classroom. Their work serves as an inspiring reminder that young leaders can create lasting impact by taking action to support the well-being of their peers and community.
