About:
The Centreach and Newfield Girls Basketball teams came together for a powerful Coaches vs. Cancer game, showcasing not just their talent on the court but the deep bonds and compassion that define the Middle Country community.
One of the highlights of the evening was seeing both teams side by side—friends beyond the rivalry—raising money for a cause that touches so many. Many of the players know each other from playing basketball outside of school, and that camaraderie brought an extra layer of joy to the night. The smiles, laughter, and playful comments during foul shots captured the spirit perfectly. Even fouls came with a pat on the back, and whenever a player went down—whether from Centreach or Newfield—girls from both teams rushed in to help her up.
These small moments of sportsmanship showed the incredible character of these student-athletes and the strong connections built through the game they love.
Honoring the Flynn Family
At halftime, the community paused to honor the Flynn family—well-known Middle Country residents and owners of Yaphank Deli. The Flynns have been longtime supporters of Middle Country athletics, always giving back to local sports programs.
This year’s recognition carried special meaning. Jen Flynn, a breast cancer survivor, has dedicated herself to supporting women’s health and cancer research. In a touching tribute, the Centreach and Newfield girls basketball programs donated funds to support her efforts and advance research that helps women across the region.
A Night of Purpose and Unity
From heartfelt gestures on the court to uplifting moments at halftime, the Coaches vs. Cancer game embodied the true meaning of community, resilience, and service. Middle Country continues to shine—on and off the court—in its commitment to supporting one another and making a meaningful impact.
