About:
Montevideo Public Schools recently united students, student-athletes, and community partners for a powerful Mental Health Awareness Night focused on education, support, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
Held on January 8, the initiative took place during the Montevideo vs. MACCRAY boys’ basketball game and the home swim meet against Hutchinson. The event, themed “Together We Are Breaking the Stigma,” created multiple opportunities for the school community to come together and show their commitment to student well-being.
The night was about more than competition—it was about students taking a stand to normalize conversations around mental health. By showing up to support one another, student-athletes helped send a clear message that mental health matters and that no one has to face challenges alone. Athletes and coaches from both teams wore matching shirts promoting the event’s theme, reinforcing unity and shared purpose across programs.
The Chippewa County CARE Collaborative played a key role in the initiative, hosting informational booths that provided students and families with valuable mental health resources, coping strategies, and guidance. In addition, Montevideo student-athletes created and shared a meaningful video featuring mental health statistics while encouraging peers to seek help and support when needed.
By bringing mental health awareness into everyday school activities like athletic contests, Montevideo High School helped foster a positive and supportive environment where important conversations could happen naturally. Events like this strengthen connections between students, families, and community organizations while empowering young people to lead with empathy and advocacy.
Through initiatives such as Mental Health Awareness Night, the Montevideo Hawks continue to demonstrate how school activities and athletics can serve as impactful platforms for leadership, awareness, and lasting community change.
