About:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Athletics Department took part in the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Day March and Celebration that was held on the Flagstaff campus. Student-athletes, coaches and administrators joined university students, faculty and staff in remembering Dr. King.
The day began with an MLK Jr. March through campus, followed by a Martin Luther King Jr. “Defend YOUR Dream” presentation.
“Dr. King was a transformational and inspiring leader whose influence can be seen through the opportunities provided to students across many college campuses” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Lisa Campos. “It was an honor to participate in the MLK Jr. Day March and Celebration with the entire NAU Community. As is often said, MLK Jr. Day is a day ‘on’, not a day ‘off’ and I’m excited that our coaches, student-athletes and staff experienced the power of Dr. King on this day.”
In addition to the MLK Jr. Day March and Celebration, members of the NAU Student Athletic Advisory Committee put on a “Ballers’ Ball” to help raise over $1,000 for the Murdoch Community Center. The event included games, a photo booth, food and dancing.
“The Ballers’ Ball has been a dream of mine since I was a sophomore on SAAC” said senior soccer player Alana D’Onofrio. “As a senior officer I was finally able to make it a reality. At first it was a great opportunity for a cohesion event, and then the thought came to us to hold the event on MLK Jr. Day and donate some of the proceeds to a local non-profit organization associated with the MLK Jr. Day events. With over 200 student-athletes and guests in attendance we were able to give back to the community center in downtown Flagstaff.”
