Smithtown’s Nesaquake Middle School students took a walk to remember as they raised money for water wells in South Sudan.
“It’s cool because people in South Sudan have to walk for water every day and it’s a challenge. So by us walking it raises awareness,” explained seventh grade student Ava Giella who participated with classmates in the “Walk a Mile in Nya’s Shoes” event.
Organized by Nesaquake English teacher Marissa LoSardo, students at Nesaquake have walked to raise awareness about the water crisis in South Sudan since 2016. Each year they raise about $1,000 to help build a well in South Sudan, she mentioned.
“For some girls there this is the only thing they do, walk all day for water,” LoSardo said. “This helps bring clean water to them so they don’t have to walk anymore.”
LoSardo said the students raised more than $1,400 on this walk.
