About:
First grade students at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently turned an idea into reality just in time for the holidays. After reading “The Mitten Tree,” students developed an idea to provide gloves to a local homeless shelter in Ronkonkoma, New York.
As part of the students‘ effort, they wrote and read announcements about their fundraiser each morning, made posters and visited classrooms to present the idea to their peers. With help from the Nokomis community, students have created a bountiful tree full of different winter clothing, including hats, scarves, gloves and mittens.
