About:
The North Middlesex Regional High School Field Hockey team took the field for a cause bigger than the game, hosting a special Morgan’s Message Awareness Night to promote student-athlete mental health and remind players that their worth extends far beyond their performance in sports.
With 21 student-athletes participating, the event brought teammates, coaches, and opponents together around the powerful message “Human > Athlete,” emphasizing the importance of compassion, connection, and mental well-being both on and off the field.
Putting the Human Before the Athlete
For North Middlesex’s first-year head coach, the event was about much more than raising awareness. It was an opportunity to create a supportive team environment where every athlete feels seen, valued, and understood.
Following a season filled with both challenges and triumphs, the coach recognized that some players were struggling with how they viewed themselves and their experiences as student-athletes.
Determined to make mental health a priority, the coach wanted every player to understand that they are more than their athletic accomplishments and that they never have to face difficult moments alone.
Above all, the message was simple: They are people first and athletes second.
Learning Morgan’s Story and Opening Important Conversations
In preparation for the awareness game, the team gathered the Friday before to watch a Morgan’s Message video and learn more about Morgan’s story and the mission behind the organization.
The experience was deeply emotional for many of the players. Several were moved to tears, while others connected personally with the challenges and emotions shared in the video.
The experience opened the door to meaningful conversations about mental health, the pressures student-athletes face, and the importance of checking in on one another.
By creating a safe space for these discussions, the team reinforced the importance of kindness, understanding, and seeking support when needed.
Bella Mazza Leads with Compassion and Kindness
One of the most inspiring parts of the event came from junior student-athlete Bella Mazza, whose personal commitment to Morgan’s Message helped make the evening especially meaningful.
Even before the awareness game was planned, Bella had approached her coach to share that she was completing her civics action project on Morgan’s Message because of how strongly she connected with its mission.
Her passion for student-athlete mental health inspired her to take an active role in spreading the message of compassion and support.
Bella wanted to extend that kindness beyond her own teammates and came up with a thoughtful way to include their opponents from Westford Academy.
Before the game, while Westford’s players were warming up, Bella brought over a bag of handmade motivational clips, each featuring an uplifting and encouraging quote.
After approaching Westford’s coaches and sharing one of the clips, Bella asked permission to place a motivational message on every opposing player’s bag.
The gesture created a special moment of connection between the two teams.
As Westford’s players discovered the encouraging messages, smiles spread across their faces. The Westford coach was so touched that she told Bella it was the sweetest thing she had ever seen a team do for an opponent.
It was a beautiful reminder that sportsmanship, kindness, and compassion can make an impact far beyond the scoreboard.
Recognizing Leadership On and Off the Field
Bella’s leadership continued throughout the evening as she competed with tremendous heart and determination.
In recognition of her hard work and dedication, she was named Player of the Game.
The honor was especially meaningful because Bella had demonstrated the very message the team hoped to share: that being a great teammate and student-athlete involves more than athletic performance.
Through her initiative, kindness, and willingness to support others, Bella showed how one student-athlete can inspire positive change throughout an athletic community.
Building a Culture of Support Beyond the Game
While the Morgan’s Message game centered around the field hockey program, the team’s hope is that its impact will reach student-athletes across every sport at North Middlesex.
The event reinforced an important message: No student-athlete should feel alone, and mental health should always be treated with compassion, understanding, and support.
By encouraging open conversations and reminding players that they can lean on their teammates, coaches, and school community, North Middlesex is helping build an athletic culture where well-being comes first.
The team hopes to continue growing this initiative in future seasons, reaching even more student-athletes and encouraging others to embrace the mission of Morgan’s Message.
Making an Impact Beyond the Field
North Middlesex Field Hockey’s Morgan’s Message Awareness Night demonstrated how student-athletes can use their platform to create meaningful change.
From the emotional team discussions to Bella Mazza’s thoughtful gesture toward Westford Academy, the evening was filled with examples of leadership, empathy, and genuine care for others.
With 21 student-athletes coming together to support an important cause, the team showed that some of the most powerful victories in sports happen beyond competition.
Through their commitment to Morgan’s Message, the North Middlesex Field Hockey team is reminding fellow student-athletes that they are never alone, their mental health matters, and they will always be more than an athlete.
