About:
While many spent Veterans Day warm indoors, the Northport/Commack Varsity Boys & Girls Swim Teams were out in the cold and making a tremendous impact. Through their “Let’s Feed 50 Families” Food Drive, approximately 60 student-athletes from both programs turned their day off into a powerful act of service for local families in need.
Working in coordinated shifts outside the Stop & Shop in Huntington Village thanks to the store’s generous support , the swimmers braved snow and freezing temperatures to collect donations for Ramon’s Food Pantry. Their efforts paid off in a big way. With the help of an incredibly supportive community, the teams gathered more than three carloads of food, totaling over 50 bags, along with $1,140 in gift cards to help purchase turkeys for Thanksgiving.
A standout leader in this effort was Liam Dwyer, a member of the boys team, who played a key role in organizing the project and coordinating both squads. His leadership helped unite the teams around a shared mission: ensuring that as many families as possible will enjoy a warm holiday meal this season.
This initiative reflects everything that makes high school athletics so meaningful — leadership, compassion, responsibility, and a commitment to lifting others up. The Northport/Commack swimmers proved that their strength reaches far beyond the pool, and their community showed just how powerful generosity can be when everyone comes together.
Their food drive continues to be an ongoing effort, and the teams are still sorting through the impressive number of donations received. Thanks to these remarkable athletes and their community partners, dozens of local families will feel supported and cared for this Thanksgiving.
