About:
Northport High School continues to demonstrate the power of unity, compassion, and perseverance through its incredible commitment to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
Now entering its 18th year, Relay For Life of Northport has become a powerful tradition that brings together students, families, survivors, caregivers, and community members in the fight against cancer. Last year, despite challenging weather conditions, more than 1,000 participants came together and raised an outstanding $88,000 to support cancer research, advocacy, and patient services.
Participants continued walking “through the storm” both literally and symbolically, showing unwavering resilience and dedication to honoring those impacted by cancer. The event served as a powerful reminder of the strength of the Northport community and its commitment to supporting those battling the disease, celebrating survivors, and remembering loved ones lost.
Northport athletic programs, including field hockey and track & field, along with dance and many other student groups, play an important role in making the event a success each year. Students are involved in every aspect of Relay For Life, taking on leadership roles as Team Captains while guiding fundraising efforts and helping organize the event from start to finish.
Student leaders help plan activities, create the script for the evening, secure sponsorships and raffle donations from local businesses, connect with survivors for the Survivor Dinner, and assist with event setup and breakdown. Their dedication showcases the incredible impact young people can make when they rally around a shared mission of service and support.
In addition to the annual event, students continue working throughout the year to grow awareness and participation. Organizers recently hosted an “Ask Me Anything” information night at the high school, helping students and families learn more about joining teams and becoming involved in the Relay movement.
More than just a fundraising walk, Relay For Life is a global movement led by passionate volunteers who embody the American Cancer Society’s vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Events take place in communities across the world and focus on four signature elements: celebrating cancer survivors, honoring caregivers, remembering loved ones through luminaria ceremonies, and fighting back through fundraising and advocacy.
The impact of Relay For Life continues to be felt both locally and globally. Through events like Northport’s, the American Cancer Society is able to fund groundbreaking cancer research, provide critical patient support services, educate communities, and inspire survivors to share their stories and offer hope to others.
The Northport community is already looking ahead to returning “Back to the Track” on June 13, 2026, continuing a tradition that has become a symbol of hope, strength, leadership, and unity.
