About:
The Northport Varsity and JV field hockey teams (50 girls) were in charge of organizing this event along with the booster club parents. Kim Waszczak is the chair of the event. The girls and their parents collected donations from the community to create baskets for a Chinese auction. 9 Suffolk teams participated in the event. (A total of over 200 athletes)
The day included a memorial and survivor walk, three hours of small-team scrimmages, and team dance-offs. The day ended with the “Fight for a Cure” cheer.
Cumulatively among the nine teams, a total of $2,277 was raised.
Different teams did different things to raise money. For example, Huntington collected a per goal donation during all games prior to the event. We sold tee shirts and pinnies for the event (a portion of sales were donated) Longstreth Field Hockey Company provided donations of headbands, pink balls, and bracelets for each girl who participated. My team made posters for each team. The girls worked on the event through the month of September. The Play for a Cure tournament lasted from 8am-2pm.
A few years ago, I had the idea for a multi-team scrimmage fundraiser and it’s really inspiring to see girls come together for this cause that affects so many women — especially here on the island. — coach and event organizer Gina Walling.
