About:
NYIT Athletics is spreading holiday cheer.
Thanks to generous support from student-athletics and a collection drive at Wednesday’s basketball doubleheader, NYIT delivered three bins full of unwrapped gifts to Toys for Tots.
Women’s lacrosse players Angelina Cuevas and Daniella Avalos, as well as the Bears mascot, helped deliver the gifts to Toys for Tots on Thursday.
The charitable effort is the latest in which NYIT’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has either spearheaded or participated in this semester. Other projects have included gathering supplies for victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico as well as ensuring needy area families had proper Thanksgiving meals.
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.
“SAAC believes the holidays are a great time to give back to the community,” SAAC advisor Kerri Handras said. “They want to ensure all kids get to feel the magic of Christmas.”
