About:
Chiara Marangelli’s fourth grade class at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District recently donated to the World Wildlife Fund after reading “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate.
The novel is inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan. After Ms. Marangelli read the book aloud to her students, the class was motivated to give back to their environment. The students researched ways to help wildlife and collectively decided to donate to the World Wildlife Fund which protects bears’ natural habitats. To do this, the students adopted a bear paid for by collecting recyclables.
