About:
The Mills Pond Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School held a walkathon on May 12 to raise money to purchase a playground set for the children at a hospital in El Salvador. Each year, the Cares Club chooses one organization for its fundraising efforts. This school year, the club chose Medical Mission International in El Salvador.
Close to 60 fourth- and fifth-graders, which include student athletes, participated in the walkathon and raised $4,242, above their initial goal of $3,900 to cover the cost of the playground set. Medical Mission International provides immediate medical and surgical care to people in underserved regions of the world who have limited access to health care services, particularly to women and children. Their current projects are based in rural El Salvador. Earlier in the year, Cares Club members organized a Museum Walk, displaying photographs, language, geography, foods and toys from El Salvador. The art classes in Mills Pond have been creating artwork from El Salvador to further enrich this study.
