About:
Rhame Avenue School third-graders, including student athletes, in Heidi Kreit’s and Gayle Beyrer’s classes planted hand crafted pinwheels near the school’s peace pole in honor of the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21.
Prior to the event, the students decorated pinwheels with drawings they thought represented peaceful ideas, including rainbows, hearts and peace symbols. During the day of the planting, children spoke about what they could do to make the world a more peaceful place. One student suggested becoming president of the United States to enact laws, while others spoke about taking part in community service and creating medications that help people.
Beyrer and Kreit said celebrating the International Day of Peace was a great way to begin the new school year because it focused on having empathy and encouraged a safe environment in the school community.
