About:
The Pittsford Boys Hockey team exemplifies what it means to be leaders both on and off the rink, with a strong commitment to giving back to their community. This year, their impactful efforts have spanned several meaningful initiatives that highlight their dedication to making a difference:
Pink the Rink
Since 2008, the Pittsford Hockey program has hosted its annual Pink the Rink event to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Founded by Celester Frohm, whose son Aaron played for the team, this event has grown into a community tradition. Players honor cancer victims by wearing special jerseys with commemorative patches, creating a powerful connection with families affected by the disease. Over the years, Pink the Rink has raised more than $100,000, with all proceeds directly supporting breast cancer research. The event is the team’s most heavily attended game, showcasing how sports can unite a community for an important cause.
Teacher Appreciation Nights
The team shows gratitude to educators by hosting Teacher Appreciation Nights, where players invite teachers who have made a significant impact on their lives. Teachers are treated to snacks, team bonding experiences, and even get the honor of reading the pregame lineup in the locker room. These events strengthen the bond between the team and the school community, while celebrating the role teachers play in shaping the players’ success on and off the ice.
Free Clinic: Skate with the Panthers
In an effort to inspire the next generation of athletes, the team runs a free hockey clinic for kids aged 12 and under from the Pittsford community. Known as Skate with the Panthers, this program invites young players to learn, practice, and play alongside varsity athletes. Team members run skill stations and engage with the kids, helping to ignite a passion for hockey while fostering community connections.
Holiday Giving and Special Needs Hockey Collaboration
The team also dedicates time to supporting families in need, donating Thanksgiving meals and participating in holiday drives for toys or groceries. Beyond that, they’ve partnered with the Rochester Ice Cats, a local hockey team for players with special needs, to hold a joint practice and game. This collaboration provides a meaningful opportunity for players to engage with others in their community while promoting inclusivity in the sport.
The Pittsford Boys Hockey team continues to set a shining example of leadership, compassion, and community involvement. Their efforts inspire those around them and prove how sports can drive positive change.
