About:
Turning small numbers into big numbers is an area expertise for students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, who recently turned loose change into a large charitable donation. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society held its Pennies for Patients fundraiser, and the Student Government at Birch Lane collected donations for several weeks. The school raised $15,324, the second highest total on Long Island. Adviser Brian Mulcahy, noting that more than half of the money collected was from coins, said he was very proud of the student body for exceeding the fundraising goal of $10,000.
