About:
The Port Jefferson School District thanks students for sharing a fundraising effort they conducted as guests on the “Spotlight on Long Island Schools” show on LI News Radio 103.9 FM.
Hosted by Mr. Robert Vecchio on Zoom, the Q-and-A format, 30-minute show highlighted Edna Louise Spear Elementary School’s “Save Madagascar” fundraiser spearheaded by Mrs. Laura Kelly and Mrs. Paige Lohmann’s fifth grade class.
Along with Mrs. Lohmann, students Josie Amtmann, Gideon Cesare, Jacob Fulton, Kenneth Polanco and Bradley Winters recounted a journalism lesson and an article they read about how climate change had caused drought and famine in Madagascar.
Students visited the lower grade levels to share their research, created posters and donation boxes to put around the school and made daily announcements each morning to advertise the fundraiser. With an intended goal of $320 to feed 45 people for one month, the schoolwide fundraising efforts raised $900. The program aired on Feb. 12.
