About:
It was a student-driven, student-initiated community fund-raiser and “awareness” event. Within our program we have numerous student-athletes who have parents who have, or have had cancer. We have some who have “rung the bell” at Roswell who are considered cancer free or are in remission, and a number of others who are actively fighting this dread disease. Our School, and our opponent on the day we selected to host the Race For Hope (Kenmore West High School) have a great kinship and working relationship. They were “all in” from the beginning. Prior to the event, students, parents and coaches created a basket raffle, prepared for a 50/50, acquired numerous “awareness” items that could be sold, and decked the stadium out in pink. Student-athletes from both schools wore pink, as well. We had a tremendous amount of support from the community. The culminating event was when we summoned all the “bell-ringers” and “fighters” to the finish line, filled in with family, friends and both teams, had a ceremonial “Ringing of the Bell”, and then all took a walking lap of the track together, behind our Race For Hope banner. It was a day to celebrate victories, provide support for those who are actively fighting, create awareness and promote sportsmanship. With the help of all concerned, the track program was able to raise over $2500 which was presented to Roswell Park a few days later.
