About:
At Red Hook High School, the boys’ varsity lacrosse team isn’t just known for their athletic grit—they’re also recognized for their deep commitment to community and cause. One cause especially close to their hearts is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, thanks to a story that begins with one of their own.
Jake Marshall, a Red Hook lacrosse alumnus and current assistant coach, is more than just a team member—he’s a survivor. At just two and a half years old, Jake was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor called an ependymoma. Following surgery at Albany Med, his chances of survival were estimated at just 30%. But everything changed when Jake and his family connected with St. Jude. The hospital not only provided lifesaving treatment but also relieved the family of financial burdens, allowing them to focus solely on Jake’s recovery.
Jake’s journey and his unwavering spirit have become a beacon of hope and motivation for the Red Hook program. A four-year member of the varsity team, Jake wasn’t always the star on the field, but his dedication, resilience, and contagious enthusiasm left an indelible mark. Today, he continues to inspire as a coach and role model, channeling his gratitude into action through various fundraising efforts for St. Jude.
Head Coach Rich Saulino reflects on Jake’s impact: “Jake’s energy and passion are unmatched. We’re deeply grateful to St. Jude—not just for saving his life, but for giving us the opportunity to know and grow with him.”
The team continues to honor Jake’s story and support St. Jude through local fundraising events. One beloved tradition is their participation in “Ice Cream for Breakfast,” an annual event hosted by Holy Cow, a Red Hook ice cream shop. What started as a pancake breakfast at the firehouse has evolved into a spirited springtime gathering that brings the community together for a great cause.
For Red Hook lacrosse, this isn’t just about raising money—it’s about celebrating life, resilience, and the power of community. Their ongoing support for St. Jude is a testament to how one person’s journey can inspire a whole team to make a difference.
