About:
On Nov. 2, Floral Park Memorial High School hosted a schoolwide Red-Out Day for the victims of the recent hurricanes. Faculty, staff and students dressed in red from head to toe.
During lunch periods, Mr. Pickett, the varsity football coach, hosted Kick for a Cause, in which students and adults had the opportunity to kick a field goal for a donation of $1 per kick. Those who kicked a field goal with the longest distance won a gift card. Mr. Obloj participated in Kick for a Cause, and many students competed against him.
After school, FPM hosted a walkathon on the athletic track. Students, faculty, staff and community members attended the festivities. Participants were encouraged to make a monetary or tangible contribution and in exchange, walkers were given red shoelaces to wear. The orchestra, chorus and band members performed musical selections while the junior high, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders encouraged walkers. The Florettes also helped motivate the walkers by cheering and walking alongside them.
Floral Park Memorial partnered up with New York State Senator Elaine Phillips and Long Island Cares for the H20 for Puerto Rico drive, to which numerous cases of water were donated. Floral Park Memorial would also like to give a special “thank-you” to Stratford Avenue Elementary in Garden City and Girl Scout Troop 1186 for donating a tremendous amount of water and many needed supplies. Floral Park Memorial raised a total of $1,800 to be donated to hurricane relief efforts such as Unidos Por Puerto Rico and The Empire State Relief and Recovery Effort.
Floral Park Memorial also took the opportunity to surprise former principal Dr. Kathleen Sottile with a farewell. Dr. Sottile is the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the district and her Floral Park Memorial family wishes her good luck. Thank you to all who contributed to these great events for such an honorable cause!
