About:
The Byron High School SADD Chapter hosted Red Ribbon Week from October 23rd to October 30th. Student members prepared multiple flyers and posters to hang around the school for staff and students. Poster information included ways for students to show their support for friends and/or family members that are or have struggled with substance abuse or bullying as well as various ways for students to get help (speaking with a trusted adult in the building, reaching out to a counselor, connecting with professionals through 988 or Olmsted County Health) as well as providing information about the dangers of vaping with information we received from Olmsted County Public Health. Students decorated the main spaces of the school for Red Ribbon Week, displayed posters, read announcements each morning to the high school, and posted information in all Google Classrooms for students and staff to read.
On Thursday, October 29th we invited all staff and students to wear RED to stand against bullying, promote a drug-free life, support those battling addiction, and show compassion, kindness, and hope for everyone going through difficult times. SADD students also prepared a table display for students and staff to view on Friday, October 30th to culminate Red Ribbon Week. They included pamphlets about the dangers of vaping (received from Olmsted Public Health), business cards for our local public health nurse and a wheel that students can spin to win a prize (pencils, red ribbon stress balls, Sour Patch Kids with a SADD message or Hershey Kisses with a SADD message). They also created signs to thank our local businesses that donated items to make this week possible, The Bears Den and Somerby Golf Club. Overall it was a great week to raise awareness for living an drug-free and bully-free lifestyle and I am so proud of this group of students for taking the time to offer help and support for those going through hardships at this time.
We still have a lot of work to do and we will continue to help our students make healthy decisions.
