About:
Students in Jennifer Meschi’s first grade class at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School have been learning all about penguins. While conducting research on penguins, they learned that the Magellanic penguins are on the near-threatened list. Meschi came across the work that the Aquarium of the Pacific is doing to help the Magellanic penguin population. They offer the opportunity to adopt a Magellanic penguin to help further conservation and rehabilitation work.
“I had a great discussion with my students and we decided to try and raise the $50 to adopt a penguin by collecting beverage containers to recycle,” Meschi said. “Not only will recycling help us to raise the funds to adopt a penguin, the class discussed how our efforts will also be helping the environment. We collected 1,797 recyclable containers and raised $89.85!”
