About:
In a powerful display of athletics meeting activism, the Rocky Point Varsity Softball team is proving that their impact extends far beyond the diamond. This season, these young athletes are stepping up to the plate for a cause bigger than the game itself – raising awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research.
Under the leadership of Coach Ally Bricker, the team has launched a comprehensive fundraising campaign that’s set to turn Rocky Point into a meaningful “sea of purple” – the symbolic color of pancreatic cancer awareness. This initiative showcases how youth athletes can leverage their platform to create lasting community impact.
The team’s multi-faceted fundraising approach includes: • Custom merchandise sales through their booster club (available at: https://rpsoftball25.itemorder.com/shop/home/) • Stand-up-to-cancer signs along the dugout, featuring honorees’ names in colors representing different types of cancer • Game-day activities including 50/50 raffles and concession sales • Social media awareness campaigns and community outreach
What makes this initiative particularly touching is the personal connection being created through the stand-up-to-cancer signs. Each honoree’s name will be written in colors corresponding to their specific type of cancer, creating a powerful visual reminder of the lives touched by this disease.
The entire Rocky Point softball program is rallying behind this cause, with JV and middle school teams joining the effort to staff fundraising activities during game day. This all-hands-on-deck approach demonstrates how sports programs can unite different age groups for a common cause.
“Through dedication, teamwork, and a commitment to making a difference, these athletes are going beyond the game to support an important cause,” notes Coach Bricker. The team’s efforts mirror similar initiatives we’ve seen across Long Island, including recent cancer awareness events by Cazenovia Lakers Hockey and Byram Hills’ Pink the Rink, showing how our student-athletes are leading the charge in community service.
