About:
Students and staff across the Sachem Central School District participated in heartwarming events and activities this February in recognition of P.S. I Love You Day, an initiative that looks to eliminate bullying and promote mental health awareness.
At elementary schools around the district, students were joined virtually by peer education students from Sachem high schools who led inspiring assemblies on kindness and being proud of who you are. At Lynwood Avenue Elementary School, peer educators joined students virtually to lead them through an activity exploring ways to be kind to themselves and others.
At Hiawatha Elementary School, first grade students in Mrs. Smith’s class participated in a P.S. I Love You Day scavenger hunt where they searched throughout the school building for a collection of important words to complete the activity. The words students found while participating in the hunt included listen, share, play, together, wave, kindness, smile and care.
Students across Merrimac Elementary School filled a cutout of a foot with positive words and messages to align with the theme of this year’s P.S. I Love You Day, “One step at a time.” The events that were held throughout the building were facilitated by students from the Student Lighthouse Team and helped to bolster the importance of kindness throughout their school building.
“I think P.S. I Love You Day is important to participate in so we can help students not feel alone,” said Rachel, a fifth grader at Merrimac. “It makes me happy to help with these activities and let people know they are loved.”
At Cayuga Elementary School, students filled out friendship chains, sharing ways that students can build meaningful friendships, that were then connected and displayed throughout the school to inspire kindness. Additionally, students wrote kind messages to their fellow students on Post-it notes, and fourth grade student Joslyn Richardson led the Cayuga Kindness Challenge where students collected plastic bottles to be recycled, with the funds donated to P.S. I Love You Day.
