About:

Sailors Supporting Sailors is a new club here at Hen Hud for our student-athletes to bring awareness to mental health issues. As the athletic trainer, I was seeing athletes struggling during the fall to balance everything and for some it was affecting their performance. I spoke to Tom Baker and our principal, James Mackin about wanting to create a club or something where student-athletes could come and talk about mental health issues and learn how to spot issues in themselves as well as their teammates. From that, Sailors Supporting Sailors was born. Our first meeting was 3/28/2022. We meet 2 times a month and we have about 28 student-athletes that have attended. They are all athletes on a spring team at the moment. My goal for next year is to have athletes from all season, not just the athletes that are in season.
Below is our mission and goals:

Mission: Sailors Supporting Sailors’ mission is to bring awareness to the mental health issues that can arise for athletes and their teammates.

Goals:

  • To educate athletes about mental health issues that can develop due to various variables: ie: injury, academic pressure, the pandemic, the college process, peer pressure, parental pressure, athletic performance pressure, potential addiction to just name a few

  • To educate about ways to help cope with these variables and stress

  •  To promote the philosophies of The Harris Project – CODA and 15 for Life foundations

We have been promoting both CODA and 15 for Life in all our spring sports teams. I have spoken to each team about 15 for Life and why we are supporting the foundation. Every athlete is either wearing a helmet sticker on their helmet or was given a pin of the 15 for Life logo. We will be doing the same thing with CODA starting in the fall.

We designated 2 lacrosse games, one boys and one girls, to be a Mental Matters Matchup. The goal was to tell the story of 15 for Life and raise awareness for Mental Health issues. We had a table with information from both associations along with stickers, bracelets, buttons, etc. Hen Hud is considered a 15 for Life ambassador and is 1 of only 15 colleges/high schools/clubs across the nation that are part of the 15 Sticks program.

Sailors Supporting Sailors is very new and ever evolving but I am super motivated to spread mental health awareness to all of our student-athletes.
