About:

Student advisory council members at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore raised $900 during a fundraiser to assist Australian wildlife. Student Jack Ryan proposed raising money for the koalas and kangaroos whose habitats were damaged during Australia’s deadly fires.

Under the direction of advisers Debra Ammendola and Mary Beth Cammarata, SAC held a two-day fundraiser selling koala pencil grips. Students also volunteered to color a picture of a koala and to submit it to SAC with a dollar. All proceeds will benefit the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

Ms. Ammendola said, “The entire community came together for this fundraiser. This is the perfect example of how one student, like Jack, can make a difference.”
