About:
First-graders have been in the giving spirit at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Teacher Michelle Mittler spearheaded a grade-level toy drive that resulted in the collection of more than 100 toys for Cohen’s Children’s Hospital.
Ms. Mittler said that some toys will be given to children at the hospital as Christmas presents, while others will be used to help stock the play rooms. She added that the purpose of the toy drive is not only to make the holidays brighter for many kids, but to teach Saw Mill students the values of generosity and kindness.
“I hope to teach them to understand that giving is a huge part of the holiday season,” she said. “It’s an important life lesson, the help out and to be compassionate.”
