About:
On Sept. 10, students of Northport High School had shortened periods throughout the day to accommodate an important gathering in the afternoon: a remembrance vigil for the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.
Split into two sessions, students exited the building and sat in the bleachers, where a moving performance by the Northport High School band and choir kicked off the ceremony. Members of the band displayed the American flag, as students sat quiety in the stands. Principal Robert Dennis thanked everyone for their attendance, and noted the significance of the event. While current students may not have experienced the day first hand, he emphasized the longlasting impact it has on our history, especially as New Yorkers.
Following Mr. Dennis’s introduction, teacher and veteran Darryl St. George, who was in Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001, spoke to students. He recalled the events of the day, his subsequent enlistment in the United States Navy and time spent in Afghanistan. His unique perspective helped provide students with context and a deeper understanding of the impact of this tragic historical event and the war that followed.
That same evening, students, families and community members gathered for an additional remembrance vigil at Northport High School, organized by Mr. St. George. This somber event honored all those lost and recognized the many heroes of 9/11.
