About:
Shore 2 Shore is bringing its athletes together for a meaningful cause, launching a club-wide food drive in partnership with Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank to help support local families facing food insecurity.
To make the initiative fun and engaging, the club has turned the drive into a friendly competition among teams. Each team will work to collect the highest total poundage of non-perishable food donations, with the winning group earning a special prize — custom shooting shirts designed by the players themselves. The competition not only motivates participation but also encourages teamwork, leadership, and shared purpose across the club.
Families are invited to bring donations to practice on Sunday, March 15, where items will be collected by James Streater. Suggested donations include staple non-perishable foods such as peanut butter and jelly, pasta, canned goods, cereal, mac and cheese, and rice. Organizers ask that all items be unopened and not expired to ensure they can be distributed safely to those in need.
Beyond the immediate impact of helping stock local food pantries, the initiative is designed to teach athletes the importance of giving back and to strengthen the positive culture within the Shore 2 Shore program. Through service opportunities like this, players gain valuable perspective on community needs while building pride in contributing to something greater than the game.
Participants will also have the opportunity to receive community service credit hours, and Long Island Cares can provide acknowledgment letters recognizing their involvement. The effort is being organized by Lucas Essignman, coach of the Shore 2 Shore 2036 Sasquatch team, who is helping lead the club’s commitment to service and community engagement.
By combining competition with compassion, Shore 2 Shore is demonstrating how youth sports programs can inspire athletes to make a meaningful difference both on and off the field.
