About:
This past weekend, the Smithtown Relay for Life event was held at Smithtown High School West, showcasing the incredible dedication of students from both Smithtown High School East (HSE) and Smithtown High School West (HSW). Relay For Life is a team-based fundraising event where participants take turns walking around the track for 12 hours straight, symbolizing the relentless fight against cancer. Each team ensured that a member was on the track at all times, reflecting the reality that cancer never rests.
Throughout the event, teams created creatively themed campsites and continued fundraising by collecting donations through food sales, games, and activities. All proceeds support the American Cancer Society and contribute to each team’s overall fundraising goals.
The event’s success was made possible by the dedication of the event chairs and the hardworking students who organized and participated. Special recognition goes to the Event Leadership Teams from HSW — Eleni Caldarera, Maribella Marciano, Isabella Paliwoda, and Kalle Friedmann — and from HSE — Amira Abdallah, Rabia Chattha, Maggie Worontzoff, and Ryan Dart. Together, their efforts helped raise an impressive total of over $86,000 during the Relay for Life event held on Saturday, June 7th, on the field at Smithtown High School West.
In honor of their commitment and hard work throughout the year, these eight students— all student-athletes — will receive Certificates of Merit from Senator Mario Mattera.
The community is already looking forward to next year’s Relay For Life event! The students dedicated countless hours to planning and organizing the event, meeting at least twice a month since September and weekly since mid-April, often working on planning in their own time. The event itself lasted 12 hours, with about 3 hours of setup beforehand.
