MILFORD, Conn. – Sunday was a beautiful day to honor a special young woman. The Stony Brook University softball team took part in the first-ever DK23 Fall Memorial Tournament in tribute to the late Danni Kemp. The fall tournament took place at Kemp’s alma mater Foran High School in Milford, Conn., where the softball field is named in her memory.
“It was a special day in honor of a special young woman. Under Danni’s blue sky, we played the game she loved joined by those who loved her – family, friends, former teammates, and coaches. Thank you so much to the Kemp Family, Foran High Sschool, the close-knit community of Milford, and the Sacred Heart and Fairfield teams for such a wonderful event,” said Seawolves’ head coach Megan Bryant.
The Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University softball teams joined the Seawolves to pay tribute to Danni in the inaugural tournament. Danni’s family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and members of the Foran and Milford communities were on hand in her honor.
“It was an amazingly beautiful day honoring Danni by an amazingly beautiful softball community – Stony Brook, Sacred Heart, Fairfield, and the city of Milford,” said Danni’s mother Melinda Kemp on behalf of the Kemp family.
During the Spring of 2020, Foran High School announced that it was dedicating its newly renovated softball field in the memory of Danni. Kemp passed away on March 10, 2017, after a battle with DIPG, an inoperable brain cancer. Her memory lives on at the Danni Kemp Memorial Field as well as within the Stony Brook community.
Danni’s Seawolves picked up a win on Sunday as they defeated the Pioneers, 4-0, in their first game of the day. Stony Brook was later edged by Fairfield, 5-2, in the final game of the tournament. Sacred Heart and Fairfield got tournament play underway on Sunday morning as the Stags bested the Pioneers, 3-1.
