South Glens Falls Varsity Club sends athletes to the 4 elementary schools in our district to read to the younger students. Most athletes sign up to go to the Elementary school they attended. The Teachers love to see them and many read in classes for the Teachers they had at that age.
We started this a few years ago but due to the pandemic we had to stop. This was our 1st session since the pandemic.
27 students participated. They usually spend 15-20 minutes in each class, answering questions about the sports that they play. Many will bring pictures of them playing to pass around. The athletes then read a short story to the class. Usually a book they enjoyed as a little kid.
We spend about an hour at each school.
We are working on expanding the program for next year to do one in the fall and spring. I know we will have more students involved next year. The student/athletes really enjoyed participating this week.
