About:

Southampton Village’s Railroad Plaza was recently dedicated to the memory of World War II veteran John I. Holden with the help of the Southampton High School Mariners Patriot Club, advised by Thea Fry.

The plaza was officially dedicated on Oct. 15 after the school club asked the village if it was possible to have a road dedicated to Holden. Holden was a well-known fixture in the community. He volunteered for the Rotary Club, the Boy Scouts and Southampton Fresh Air Home. He also placed American flags every Memorial Day and Veterans Day at the graves of those who served the country, a tradition that the club has continued.

The Mariners Patriot Club attended the moving dedication ceremony, with club president Emma Cervone singing the national anthem.
