About:
Coach Smith and the SSHS Varsity Baseball team donated old equipment to underserved students of Camp Big Laurel in Appalachia. The campers were so appreciative of the boxes of used equipment!
The idea for the project was headed by one of their Juniors last year, Thomas McCarthy.
Thomas heard about the camp when his mom was talking about an event for underprivileged students that was hosted at Molloy University, in Rockville Centre. It was explained to him that the kids didn’t have too much equipment to have organized sports in the region. This is when he got the idea and spoke about it with myself, and his teammates.
Over the course of a week, players would bring in equipment that they no longer needed. Some even collected gear from some friends who no longer played the sport. Thomas set up a couple of bins in our equipment closet where we put the donations. After the week, Thomas got to work and took the equipment home. From there, he sent the donations to Camp Laurel.
“As a coaching staff, we couldn’t be prouder of the student-athletes we coach.”– Coach Smith
The team also participated in the town little league’s Challenger game on a Sunday morning. “We are lucky to have players that see the big picture and want to help others enjoy the game they love.” — Coach Smith
