About:
In spirit of the season of giving, first grade students at Homestead School in Garden City engaged in a service-learning project to help members of the greater community. First graders came together to create cards and wreaths for the residents at the Plattduetsche Home Society. The students glued tissue paper to cut-out wreaths to create a festive gift that would help residents feel at home.
In addition to the wreath-making, Homestead School collected money that students earned at home doing chores to donate word searches for the residents at Plattduetsche, as well as cozy socks and a winter craft kit for the Mary Brennan Inn.
Through these projects, Homestead students learned about empathy and giving. Homestead’s “bucket filler” concept was reinforced, as students understood that doing a good dead not only makes others happy, but also makes themselves feel fulfilled.
