About:
The fifth-graders of Gene Vassel’s class at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District were declared the winners of a recent schoolwide shoe drive. The class won a brunch celebration with Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo and Barnum Woods Assistant Principal Harriet Alfano for donating the most shoes during the drive. Vassel’s class collected 177 pairs of shoes, aiding in the school’s total contribution of 2,351 pairs to the clothing recycling company Wearable Collections. According to its website, the New York City-based company keeps clothing, textiles and shoes out of landfills while generating funds for local charities.
“It’s truly remarkable to see our young children garner this enormous donation to help those in need” said Campo.
The district thanks the Barnum Woods Planning Management Team for organizing the drive and hosting the brunch to recognize the students’ generosity and hard work.
