About:
Sycamore Avenue Elementary first graders raised over $2,000 through a read-a-thon to buy backpacks and school supplies for students in need.
It all started when one student, Joe Pena, accrued points through an online math challenge and used them to purchase and donate books to children in need. From there, he went to his teacher, hoping to do more, and the idea for a gradewide read-a-thon was created. All Sycamore Avenue first grade students participated in the read-a-thon, asking family and friends for donations for each book they read.
With the money raised, the students were able to purchase 144 backpacks and school supplies. Students then assembled the backpacks themselves, including hand-written postcards with kind, encouraging words to put inside. The full backpacks will be distributed to new and incoming students in need.
