About:
This is my 11th year with our boys soccer program, and we started our fundraising efforts back in 2013. My mother at the time was fighting with breast cancer, and I sat the team down to see if any other families were affected. Many of the boys had loved ones either fighting the fight or sadly lost their battle with breast cancer, and with our season running through the month of October, we decided to do our part and raise money for the cause. This year, we decided to spend the weekend selling pink ribbons for a $1 at the World Class Soccer Complex in Orangeburg with all of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The support from the community is always so overwhelming. I prepare the boys each year and share that breast cancer is something that has impacted so many, and that they should prepare for a number of community members to stop by, and not only donate, but share their thoughts on why what they are doing is so important and express their gratitude. It is a very emotional weekend for everyone and a special opportunity for the boys to be part of something way bigger than themselves.
This year, the team raised over $1050. The boys also have the opportunity to share with the Susan G. Komen Foundation if they have any loved ones that would like to honor, and the foundation sends their loved ones a card letting them know that a donation has been made in honor of or in the memory of their family member.
