The Tappan Zee Boys Soccer program has made a meaningful impact in the fight against breast cancer. The team’s fundraising efforts began in 2013 with Head Coach Jon Jacobs, who was inspired to act while his own mother was battling the disease. Coach Jacobs discovered that many players had loved ones who were either fighting breast cancer or had sadly passed away, motivating the team to dedicate their efforts to the cause.
Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Tappan Zee boys host a weekend of fundraising at the World Class Soccer Complex in Orangeburg, selling pink ribbons for $1 each. All proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a leader in breast cancer research and awareness. This year, the team raised an impressive $2,000, continuing their long-standing tradition of giving back.
The community response is always heartwarming. Local supporters stop by not only to donate but also to share personal stories of how breast cancer has affected their families. Coach Jacobs prepares his players for these meaningful interactions, helping them understand the importance of their role. “It’s a very emotional weekend for everyone and a special opportunity for the boys to be part of something way bigger than themselves,” he says.
In addition to fundraising, the team has the chance to honor loved ones affected by breast cancer. Donations made in someone’s honor or memory prompt the Susan G. Komen Foundation to send a card to the family, bringing a personal touch to the team’s efforts and further connecting the community.
Coach Jacobs shares, “I am very proud of my team for their hard work and effort, and we will continue to do this every year and do our part to fight breast cancer.”
