About:
The Shaker Food Pantry is a food pantry here at our high school. It is 100% donation based, and through the food pantry we feed 40 families at various schools throughout the district. Each Thursday afternoon, student volunteers pack the bags for the students (the bags are anonymous, so the students don’t know for whom they’re packing a bag). The bags go home with the students on Friday afternoon, and are brought back each Monday. The number of families that receive bags grows each year, as the needs of our student population changes.
All 23 players on our team helped to collect food for the food pantry. The girls were paired up, and each pair was given a reusable shopping bag at a Wednesday practice. They had until Monday’s practice to fill the bags with food/personal care items. I gave them a list of suggested items, and each item had a point value (a box of cereal was 5 points, a can of vegetables was 1 point). The pair that filled their bag with the most “points” won. The winning pair got to plan a practice. The competition really incentivized the players to fill the bags with items the food pantry really needed.
The first picture I attached is of the girls sorting and counting the food in my classroom. The second is of them in front of the food pantry.
