About:
On May 5th, the Calhoun Varsity Softball Program hosted a remarkable event at Calhoun High School. The day centered around an Autism Acceptance game between Calhoun’s Varsity team and the Seaford Vikings. Calhoun’s team proudly donned Autism Acceptance Uniforms, featuring a puzzle piece colt logo on the front and numbers on the back, along with puzzle piece socks from John’s Crazy Socks.
The event wasn’t just about the game; it was a celebration of acceptance and inclusivity filled with raffles, popcorn, cotton candy, and a BBQ, all aimed at raising funds for C.A.M.P. Anchor, a recreation program catering to individuals with special needs in the Town of Hempstead. With the collective efforts of the community, $1,000 was raised and donated to this worthy cause. The decision to support C.A.M.P. Anchor was especially poignant for the Calhoun coaches, who recognized the significant number of students from Calhoun High School and Merrick Avenue Middle School benefiting from the program. These students frequently express their adoration for Anchor and the multitude of enjoyable opportunities it offers them. In recognizing the impact Anchor has on their lives, the coaches were inspired to support this invaluable resource for the community.
Partnering with John’s Crazy Socks allowed us to extend our support to Special Olympics, as proceeds from sock sales contribute to their cause. With a shared commitment to making a difference, the Calhoun Varsity team and the Seaford coaches, who are special education teachers, brought a personal touch to the event.
Throughout the day, the emphasis was on acceptance and inclusivity. To further this mission, both varsity softball programs facilitated the first-ever Challenger tee-ball game. Student athletes from Calhoun and Seaford worked closely with each Challenger athlete, fostering connections that transcended the game.
The event was a testament to the power of community and compassion, showcasing the impact sports can have beyond the field.
