About:

Homestead School in Garden City celebrated Unity Day in style with different activities that promoted unity, kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

Classrooms and hallways were a sea of orange, as students and staff wore the color to school. Orange is the official color of Unity Day, symbolizing unity against bullying behavior. School social worker Tracy Martinez-Catalanotti read the book “One” aloud, which uses colors to show kids how to be upstanders and support others. Martinez-Catalanotti also brainstormed with children on ways to be kind.

Students exhibited their craftiness by writing kind messages on paper strips and forming them into links, which were later joined together for a schoolwide Unity Chain. They will make crowns to wear throughout the day and then home to prompt parents to ask them about the book.

Unity Day is observed throughout the country as part of National Bullying Prevention Month.
