About:
The girls participated in an adopt a family project for its 15th plus consecutive year. The team works with the Junior High School to provide a family who cannot afford a Christmas for their family. The team is given a list of items which the family lists as basic necessities. These include such things as socks, pajamas, hats, gloves, jackets, boots and sneakers. The family also identifies wish items like makeup, video games, and sports equipment. This year the team provided all the basic necessities plus the wish list items to a family whom otherwise would not have a Christmas. On top of the basic needs and wish list items, the team worked with a local realtor to put together a food basket that included all items the family needed for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. Items included were eggs, bacon, cold cuts, hams and turkeys. As the coach I am able to help deliver the gifts and food baskets and it is such a rewarding experience to see how appreciative the families are. Due to confidentiality the girls are not allowed to take part in this process. Although they can’t take part in this process, I hope they realize the impact they had on a family in their community. It is our hope that one day the girls will continue this tradition in giving back if they are able to do so and help a local family in need.
The team also participates in a Pink Out Game to Support Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. Miles of Hope offers financial assistance, peer to peer counseling, complementary medicine, daily meals, rides to medical appointments and support for people battling cancer amongst many other things. Each year for the past 10 plus seasons the team hosts RCK, who is an intra-district rival for this game. This game is by far our biggest game of the year in terms of attendance and support from the community. The team along with its booster club has a concession stand, a 50-50 raffle and asks for donations at the door to support Miles of Hope. Miles of Hope also attends the event to spread the word about the wonderful services that they offer for the community. I think it is great for the team to participate in such a wonderful event and raise money for a local foundation that provides support to those with cancer right in our community.
