About:
Our JV and varsity softball program led by our head varsity coach Ted O’Donnell, JV coach Patty Gilmartin, and assistant softball coach Skip Stevens led the way in organizing a community service event and donated over 220 t-shirts to the staff at White Plains Hospital.
32 softball players JV & V worked with their coaches to design the t-shirts. They also created thank you cards, posters, and signs, thanking our front line heros.
The Varsity Team fundraises every year. This year we were fundraising mainly for a spring training trip to ESPN in Florida during April. Covid-19 obviously squashed those plans. We took some of the money we raised this year and with generous contributions from the 3 coaches including Varsity Assistant Coach Skip Stevens and JV Coach Patty Gilmartin we put together $1,600 to create and purchase 220 t-shirts honoring the entire staff in the White Plains Hospital Emergency Department.
The shirt was designed with input from the 3 coaches and the 4 2020 Varsity Captains; Ava Rainone, Sarah DiSanto, Zoey Kovach and Alexa Galligani. The Varsity and JV captains then had all the players from both teams write a personal note to the front line workers thanking them for their dedication and sacrifice. They emailed me all of the individual notes. We couldn’t get together to do this because of the pandemic so we got creative. Team scorekeeper, Mrs. Joan Cruz Then cut out all of the messages and pasted them to 2 large Thank You cards I gave her. One from the Varsity Team and one from the Junior Varsity Team. I then took the cards and 4 boxes of t-shirts to the hospital where I met one of the emergency department workers outside and gave her the cards and boxes which she carted to the department. We didn’t think it was appropriate or necessary to have a “presentation ceremony” as they were extremely busy treating Covid-19 patients and this was a gesture to honor and thank all of the White Plains Hospital Emergency Staff. As a result, there were no pictures taken.
I’m attaching pictures of the front and the back of the t-shirt. The WP on the back of the shirt is the WP Hospital logo. I’m also attaching pictures of the front and backs of both of the cards. The last photo is of the 2020 WPHS Varsity Team. We do not have a photo of the JV.
