About:
Every year, the Victor Wrestling program proudly leads the fight against cancer through the Victor Ahonen Takedown Cancer Duals, an event that reflects the team’s long-standing commitment to service, remembrance, and community impact.
This year, that mission expanded in a powerful way. The wrestling team learned that Victor Hockey was hosting a special cancer awareness game in honor of Sheryl, a beloved school co-worker who passed away last year after battling breast cancer. Sheryl was a wonderful woman who was deeply loved by her colleagues and the student body, and the hockey program wanted to ensure her legacy would continue in a meaningful way.
Recognizing the shared purpose, Victor Wrestling joined forces with the hockey team to support their efforts. The hockey event featured a moving pre-game ceremony, with the first ten minutes dedicated to honoring Sheryl’s life and impact. The arena was decorated for the occasion, and both teams took part by honoring individuals they were playing for, creating a powerful moment of unity, reflection, and support.
The combined efforts of both programs, along with generous donations from teams participating in the wrestling duals, including Brighton, Churchville, Hilton, Rush-Henrietta, and Webster Thomas resulted in an incredible outcome. Together, more than $5,000 was raised.
The funds will help establish a scholarship in Sheryl’s honor for Victor special education students, ensuring her compassion and dedication continue to make a difference for years to come. A portion of the proceeds will also support the Sands Cancer Center, extending the impact beyond the Victor community.
Through collaboration, remembrance, and a shared commitment to giving back, Victor Wrestling and Hockey demonstrated the true power of school athletics — using sport as a platform to honor lives, support others, and create lasting impact both on and off the mat and ice.
